Map of Klong Phiao Reservoir area
An interesting sight along the north eastern train line to Nong Khai is the Klong Phiao Reservoir, just north of Saraburi station. The track runs alongside the massive reservoir for several kilometres, elevated somewhat above the water and so close that from your window it looks as if the train is running across a wide ocean !
To get a good view you need to be seated on the right hand side of the train heading north, or on the left hand side heading south. Unfortunately the sealed windows in the air conditioned carriages can be quite murky so for a good view find a window in the fan cooled part of the train.

The picture above shows the view from the train across the reservoir - there are several kilometres of the trip like this so you have plenty of time to grab a vantage point if you want to take a few photographs. The vista across the water is very impressive and you can clearly see the mountains of Saraburi towering above the reservoir infrastructure on the far side.
The picture below is taken from a lookout platform on the other side of the reservoir (which can be accessed from the highway running parallel with the train line on the opposite side).
I stopped off here on a trip by car to Khon Kaen, to check out the views across the reservoir. There is also a small museum showcasing the history of the development of the reservoir. You can see the tiny train station in the picture - the express trains don't stop here however.
