Bali Beaches and Activities
Bali is the quintessential tropical tourist resort island, offering sun, sand, cheap hotels and shopping and a taste of Balinese culture to thousands of package tourists and solo travellers. Bali is also famous as a place where young westerners can let their hair down and party. Bali has tropical weather all year round.
There is everything from the cheapest bungalows to fabulous 5 star resorts on offer, so you are certain to find a hotel that suits your individual tastes and budget.
Several tragic bomb attacks in recent years have seen visitor numbers plummet so the crowds are smaller these days and the vendors perhaps even more keen to sell you t shirts and souvenirs. Much of the beauty of the island remains, however, for those who still choose to visit.

Bali has some great beach resorts which generally cater to different tastes. Kuta Beach is usually the busiest, with the highest concentrations of hotels, bars, restaurants and beaches packed with vendors and water sports opportunities.
Sanur beach is quieter in terms of crowds are has a calm beach popular with windsurfers. There are still plenty of hotels and entertainment spots, though the visitors tend to be families and quieter types.
Nusa Dua beach features resort hotels lined up along a beautiful lagoon and is also popular. Other popular beaches include Jimbaran Bay, Legian Beach and Soka beach.

Every possible watersport can be enjoyed in Bali, from snorkelling, diving, sailing and fishing to high sea cruises, parasailing and jet skiing. There are endless places to rent boats and equipment so bargain hard and look for operators that seem to know what they are doing!
Other activities on offer in Bali include dolphin watching boat trips, several monkey parks, some great national parks for hiking and trekking or just exploring the resorts and villages around the island.
The mountain village of Ubud is known for its picture postcard views of rice fields and abundance of local arts and crafts. Ubud is well worth a visit although it is more urban than rural these days.
Bali is also blessed with an abundance of fascinating temples and historical sites – see our articles on Bali Temples for a detailed guide, and check out our page on Bali Festivals to learn more about the culture of this beautiful island.
