Batam Island
Batam is part of Indonesia’s Riau Islands and a popular spot for day-tripping visitors who catch a high speed ferry from Singapore just 20 Km to the north. So many make the trip that Batam is second only to Bali in terms of tourist arrivals with a massive 600,000 people arriving annually.
Batam is popular for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear blue waters. There are plenty of beach resorts, hotels and bungalows to cater for visitors, with options ranging from bargain basement to 5 star resorts. Local restaurants specialising in seafood and traditional Indonesian fare are popular and there is a vast choice available to the visiting gourmet.

Other attractions include golfing, and the nightlife which is somewhat more raucous that that available in nearby Singapore. The Nagoya area in particular has a strip of bars, discos, restaurants with something to suit everyone - from discos to live music to theme pubs. There is also a Casino located just near the Nagoya area.
A night out in Batam is much cheaper at just a few dollars a beer compared to $10 to $15 a beer in some of Singapore’s nightspots. For that reason alone it is not unusual to encounter groups of Singaporeans out for a wild night on the town!
There is plenty of shopping – at prices much lower than those in Singapore – and plenty of duty free shopping.

There are a host of other activities for those wanting to have fun. There is a Go Kart track for the kids, or adults who like to behave like kids.
Paintball games are popular with visiting groups and you can also try your hand at a host of water activities including para sailing, water skiing and sailing. It is also possible to arrange a swim with the local dolphins – see any tour agency in town to arrange this.
Ferries leave from the World Trade Centre in Singapore every 30 minutes or so during the day, arriving at either Batu Ampur or Sekupang in Batam.
Batam enjoys the same hot, humid tropical weather as Singapore all year round. Singaporean and Malaysian visitors do not require a visa to enter Batam, however other nationalities do.
It is simplest to get to Batam from Singapore, if you are flying in from another country it is suggested you fly to Singapore then make your own way over to Batam by ferry.
