A tiny but wealthy country located on the island of Borneo, oil-rich Brunei has a humid tropical climate with a predominately muslim population of some 372,361 people. Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei

Brunei is well linked by air to Australia and most Asian cities in the region. There are also daily flights to nearby Kuching, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and other cities in the region. There are also direct air connections to Frankfurt and Britain via Sharjah. Brunei is linked by road to most of Borneo although expect long travel times on some routes.
Brunei is close to vital sea lanes through the South China Sea linking Indian and Pacific Oceans; two parts physically separated by Malaysia; geographically it is almost an enclave of Malaysia.
The Sultanate of Brunei's influence peaked between the 15th and 17th centuries when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines. Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy.
In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. The same family has ruled Brunei for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the developing world.
