There is more to Brunei than the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, and visitors who take the time to explore outside the capital will enjoy one of the few remaining untouched rainforests in the world.
Some magnificent unspoiled wilderness is to be found in the Ulu Temburong National Park area. You can visit the area on an all-day trip from Bandar although it is worth spending several days in the area.
From Bandar Seri Begawan you can travel by ferry or water taxi to Bangar in Temburong. It’s then a short journey on to Belalong Wilderness Park by longboat where you can enjoy nature walks, a tree top forest walk and some great swimming spots. Water rafting and adventure treks are available for those with more time.

Moving on to the Tutong district, you can discover Brunei’s rainforests which are home to some unique species including several species of giant dipterocarp trees and the colourful lipstick palm, Cyrtustachys Renda. The rainforests are also home to some interesting wildlife including the clouded leopard, the Borneo gibbon and the sun bear.
The rare tropical pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant which can be found in Brunei’s rainforests. They are hard to find, but with the right guide, time and patience you have the chance to see one of these rare flowers.
Camping is popular in Tutong and once you have registered with the rangers you are welcome to set up camp in certain locations. Many trekkers take the opportunity to spend several days hiking, swimming, bird watching or just relaxing and enjoying nature.

Other options in Brunei include a visit to Selirong Island, located in Brunei Bay about 45 minutes by boat from Bandar Seri Begawan. The island is completely comprised on mangroves and is home to the famous proboscis money. Many people take a boat to the island in the hope of spotting a monkey or two.
Another popular spot with visitors is the Luagan Lalak Recreational Park, which features freshwater swamps and lakes. There is also a traditional labi longhouse, which offers a rare opportunity to view a living jungle longhouse community. The village community is home to the Iban people from Sarawak.
There are many more options to explore in regional Brunei if you have the time and the stamina. The oil town of Seria on the coastline is heavily promoted to day trippers although there is little of interest there unless you are an oil-history nut.
Get out of the city and explore the rest of Brunei – you’ll be glad you did. The best way to do so is by car, so borrow or hire one to get the best out of Brunei. If you don’t have a car many of these attractions can be seen or organised tours covering one or more destinations.
