The most difficult section of the Thai-Burma railway construction project attempted by the Japanese in world war two is known as Hellfire Pass. Roughly 20 km from Nam Tok train station and 80 km from Kanchanaburi, Hellfire Pass encompasses a number of mountain cuttings over a length of 1 km.
Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers completed the arduous cuttings though solid rock under appalling conditions, using often primitive equipment. Workers were forced to work 12 hours and longer per shift over three months, often at night.

Of the 1000 or so prisoners who worked at Hellfire Pass, over 70% died as a result of the cruel working conditions.
Today there is a plaque on the site and a path has been built to enable visitors to reach there. You can get there by bus from Nam Tok or Kanchanaburi, although this is a very much off the beaten track journey and you may prefer to arrange a private guide with transport to take you there.
Hellfire Pass receives a steady stream of visitors and occasional groups of veterans who return in remembrance of those who died there.
