Khon Kaen Station is close to the city centre
Khon Kaen on the North Eastern Train line to Nong Khai is, like many provincial train stations in Thailand, well maintained with some manicured shrubs decorating the grounds. Ten years ago the station was well and truly on the outskirts of the city, today it has been swallowed up by the massive development and is pretty much in the center of town.
There is a quaint mounted log with the town's name painted on it outside the station (see picture below) - this is almost a symbol of the city and you can actually buy wall clocks and ornaments depicting this log in local souvenir shops if you wish.
Access to the station from around town is by songthaew (bus) or tuk tuk. There are no taxis in town. You can walk to the centre of town, and most hotels, in 10 to 15 minutes. A short walk from the station is a fresh produce market.
Khon Kaen Station
The station is quite efficient and the ticket booking office staff are helpful, there is an air conditioned room where you can buy tickets. There are stalls within the station selling drinks, snacks and (Thai language) newspapers and magazines.
Unless you are getting on or off the train at Khon Kaen you will see little of the station, the trains heading north to Nong Khai and south to Bangkok only stay a few minutes.
You should exercise the usual caution with your valuables at Khon Kaen station, particularly at night, although this is not a particularly crowded station. By and large Khon Kaen is a friendly town and problems are rare.
