Lampang is a laid back town of 50,000 people situated some 100 Km south of Chiang Mai. Sitting on the Wang River, Lampang is the only town in Thailand that uses horse and cars for public transport. You can travel to Lampang by bus or train from Bangkok or Chiang Mai.
You can travel by horse and cart all around this compact town, albeit at scandalous prices if you are a westerner. Local residents pay much lower prices than those listed on the side of the carts ! Lampang has scores of Sam Lors if you wish to avoid the horse and carts altogether.
Lampang receives far fewer visitors than nearby Chiang Mai and is therefore far cheaper and more relaxed as a result. You can easily while away a few days in this cool and friendly town.
There are a number of hotels in town to choose from if you decide to stay awhile. Hotelz Asia can offer some great deals on hotels in both Lampang and Chiang Mai.

Lampang is quite a wealthy town so in general the shops and streets are clean and well maintained and the local temples are well cared for. Lampang also has several manicured parks and even a small public zoo housing a collection of hyperactive monkeys. The local authorities and people clearly take great pride in their town and as a result strolling around is a pleasure.
There are plenty of affordable restaurants and food stalls around town and after dark there are outdoor bars and restaurants with dancing girls or pitch black sleazy night clubs to tempt the idle and adventurous.
Lampang is the friendliest town in Northern Thailand in my opinion, and jaded travelers could do far worse than to spend a few days relaxing here. The local people are incredibly welcoming and helpful by and large, and there are few attempts to hustle visitors as in many other places in the North.
