The Patuxai Monument in Vientiane
From 2006/07 Travel Blog
Vientiane's most visible sight is the Prataxui Monument, a gigantic
concrete arch modeled after the Arc De Triomphe in Paris. Built with
concrete supplied by the USA and originally intended for military purposes, it stands today as a
giant reminder of this country's confusing political past.
For a few thousand kip you can climb the stairs up to the roof of the
monument, and enjoy one of the few places in the city where it is
possible to see a panoramic view of the Vientiane skyline.
The monument is set in pleasant grounds and there is a small park and
fountain within the grounds. On the ground floor you can purchase snacks
and refreshments.

There are several floors inside the monument, full of vendors selling
souvenirs and trinkets. Prices here start at outrageous levels.....many
times more expensive than prices at the morning market.
The vendors just seem to want to make a killing and appeared completely
disinterested in actually selling stuff....."if I can't rip you off I
don't want to sell to you at all" seemed to be the attitude.
Despite this it is worth visiting this weird and wonderful monument. It seems to be popular with visitors and locals alike and is one of the charming eccentricities of Vientiane. For the best views approach the monument with the sun behind you. Whilst the view is impressive from afar, the closer you get the more you get an idea of the sheer scale of the thing.

A signed fixed to the wall beneath the monument's arch provides a curious explanation of its history. The text reads as follows (note we have retained the original spelling and syntax errors to retain the charm of the message.)
"At the Northeastern end of the Lane Xang Avenue arises a huge structure resembling the Arc De Triomphe. It is the Pataxay or Victory Gate of Vientiane, built in 1962 (B.E. 2505) but never complete due to the country's turbulent history.
From a closer distance, it appears even less impressive, like a monster of concrete. Nowadays this place is used as leisure ground for the people of Vientiane and the seventh floor on top of the building serves as an excellent viewpoint over the city."
