Lumpoon is a tiny town of 15,000 located 26 Km from Chiang Mai. I spent one night in Lumpoon and could not get out of town fast enough the next morning - although this was due to the local hotel rather than any shortcoming of Lumpoon itself.
The town is very small and you can explore the whole town in an hour or two. Aside from a commercial area, a few restaurants and a few hotels there are few facilities for visitors and few people stay in town, preferring to visit Lumpoon on a day trip from Chiang Mai.

The main attraction in town is Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, an incredibly beautiful temple dating back to 1157. The golden chedi in the complex ( pictured below ) is a postcard favourite and a spectacular site.
It is worth visiting town solely for the purpose of spending an hour or two in the compound discovering the ancient remains of Buddha's and other artifacts.

The temple is a beehive of activity - monks going about their business, worshippers coming and going and crowds of schoolchildren passing though in orderly groups.
You can visit Lumpoon by bus or train from Bangkok or Chiang Mai. There are plenty of cheap buses from Chiang Mai. Hotelz Asia can offer you great rates on hotels and resorts in nearby Chiang Mai so check out our latest deals.
