Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur - From 2006/07 Travel Blog
We alighted at Bukit Bintang monorail station and walked down to street
level to be greeted by the sight of an enormous McDonalds sign
surrounded by dozens more fast food chain neon signs.
This is downtown Bukit Bintang, in Kuala Lumpur's golden triangle district.
My first instinct was to get back on the monorail and leave as this
looked too touristy for my liking. However, our group persevered and we
were rewarded by the sight of Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister
officiating over the opening of a public toilet. You can read more about that here.

Back to Bukit Bintang. Essentially a long strip packed with fast food
joints, restaurants and places like Starbucks and KFC all selling expensive food
and drinks. It's got kind of a Times Square-meets-Singapore postmodern buzz mixed in with some stores and signs of the older KL. For many folks, it's a place to hang out and be seen.
There are also shopping centres and plenty of hotels. Prices for food, refreshments and shopping are considerably more expensive than other parts of the city.
If you are looking for internet access or a place to phone home, there are plenty of options. There is also a wide selection of hotels, for this is the part of town where many package tourists come to stay.
Garish and with all the comforts of home Bukit Bintang will appeal
to first time travelers to KL for a few days but most will find their feet
and move on to more interesting parts of town. Did you really fly all this way to Malaysia to eat hamburgers and hang out at Starbucks?

There is an element of some parts of the strip being a place to see and
be seen and it is certainly worth dropping in to Bukit Bintang at the start of the
evening to check out.
The area is well serviced by the monorail and taxis are easy to find. And take a short walk beyond the tourist strip and you will find more interesting and lively places to eat and drink.
