Little India - From 2006/07 Travel Blog
We hopped on the MRT train and in a few minutes arrived at the corner of Buffalo Road, in Singapore's Little India district.
Little India is one of the least sanitised and more enjoyable places to visit in Singapore. Rows of colorful little shop houses dominate, and each is home to small Indian enterprises selling everything you could ever want.
The smell of curry powder and exotic spices fills the air and you can buy the latest fashions in saris or beautiful Indian cloths if you so desire.

We headed straight for a large market cum food centre for coffee and Indian parathas with egg and onion....a bargain at S$1.20 a paratha and a dollar for coffee.
This area is brilliant value for food by Singapore standards.....you can eat here for a fraction of city center costs and even the hawker stalls and food centres are around half the price of elsewhere.
After that it was time to wander the streets which are a myriad of interesting restaurants, sores selling fabrics and knick knacks as well as endless herbs, spices and curries. The shop houses are mostly restored quite nicely and there is an excellent Hindu temple to see in Serangoon Road.

We had a Thai gold bracelet to unload which was worth around $350 in Thailand and happily we sold it for over A$550 in Serangoon Road. At least for once we were taking money, not spending it, and a nice little profit thanks to Singapore's high prices !
As elsewhere in Singapore, Little India has its high rise apartments and is easily accessible by bus, MRT or taxi. The area is a popular stop for tour groups so expect to encounter large groups of folks on shopping visits.
If you are short on time one of these guided tours will show you the highlights of the district, although ideally set aside a good few hours to explore Little India and try out the local cuisine.
