Explore one of Melbourne's inner city gems
South Melbourne is one of Melbourne inner city villages that just oozes history and style. Hop on any tram heading South down Spencer Street, Melbourne - or just start walking - once you're past the glitter and neon of the Crown Casino you will find yourself in Clarendon Street in downtown South Melbourne.
In true Melbourne style the main street is packed with places offering a thousand varieties of pizza, latte's and cakes. There are some fine outdoor eateries catering for the lunchtime crowds and a good selection of noodle shops too. Clarendon Street has everything from focaccia to fish'n'chips and there are plenty of beautiful people idling away the day in the pavement cafe's enjoying a chat and a coffee.



South Melbourne's popular markets are worth a visit. An ugly looking place with a car park on the roof, the markets are nonetheless a good place to find a bargain and there is a good selection of fruit and vegetable stores. Many of the stores sell cheap clothes, souvenirs and household goods, and there are bargains to be found by the careful shopper. There is also a lot of junk so buyer beware!
The real beauty of South Melbourne is in its fabulous selection of Victorian terrace houses and other architectural gems. Take a walk down Bank Street, and feast your eyes on the imposing South Melbourne Town Hall. Around here you will find countless fabulous old homes and stately buildings - it's the kind of place best enjoyed by wandering about.



After dark South Melbourne comes to life with the occasional gangland shootout and its popular pubs and clubs. The area makes a refreshing change from the CBD nightlife if its dinner and a few drinks you have in mind. The Marquee Hotel is a popular watering hole in the area, take a walk around and you will discover more.
South Melbourne has several excellent Hotels and Motels for those looking to stay locally, however most visitors choose to stay in the city and catch a tram or taxi to South Melbourne instead.
