Catch a number 16 or 96 tram from Melbourne City for the 15 minute trip to St Kilda, a multi faceted beachside suburb overlooking the bay. St Kilda is an old suburb with many fascinating old homes and art deco apartment buildings.
St Kilda has a reputation as being home to many of the city's streetwalkers and indeed this is true. The suburb also offers a vibrant mix of street culture and entertainment with popular Fitzroy Street offering a great selection of pubs, nightclubs, restaurants and cafes. Some of the Asian and Indian restaurants along Fitzroy Street are amongst the city's best yet prices are under $10 a meal.
The area is popular with backpackers and you will find a wide range of hostels, cheap hotels and motels catering for travelers on a budget. There are also cheap eating spots and internet cafes on every corner. Pick up one of the many free local entertainment magazines (available in pubs, eatery's and internet cafe's) to discover where to find live entertainment and cheap drinks.

Irresistible: Cake Shop on Acland Street

No visit to St Kilda is complete with out visiting the famous Esplanade Hotel (located on the Esplanade overlooking the bay) - home of the local live entertainment scene. This place oozes character - from the cracked ashtrays and torn leather seats to the carpets that stick to your feet and the fabulous views. Look out for the distinctive white façade of the pub and the artistic chalk creations on the outdoor notice boards.
Another popular St Kilda Street is Acland Street, famous world wide for its fabulous cake shops, trendy retro clothing stores and countless cafes and restaurants. Acland Street absolutely bustles all day long and is "the" place to be seen in St Kilda.
And don't miss Luna Park - the famous giant smiling face by the sea makes for a great photo and is open on weekends. Best of all entry is free.

Luna Park, St Kilda Beach

St Kilda's beach is pleasant and features a famous pier stretching out far into the bay. Expect to be almost blown off the pier during winter but it's a great spot for a walk or a spot of fishing in summer months.
On Sundays the St Kilda foreshore comes alive as the Sunday market opens for business. Running along the esplanade from Fitzroy Street to Luna Park the market specialises in local arts and crafts as well a smattering of clothing and alternative goods. The market is popular and you are assured of seeing a selection of local hand made products unlike anywhere else in Melbourne.
