Thailand’s tallest hotel is the 88 storey Baiyoke Sky Hotel which towers 309 metres over the city of Bangkok. Construction started in May 1990 and the hotel opened for business in January 1998.
The hotel boasts some impressive statistics. The underground pilings run 60 metres underground (roughly the height of a 22 storey building) and it takes an hour to take the 2060 steps from the bottom to the top of the building.
The most impressive feature of the Baiyoke Sky Hotel is the observation deck located on the 77th floor. The views across the city of Bangkok are incredible and reveal a face to the city that even many long term residents have never seen. I took a group of Thai friends who had lived in Bangkok all their lives to the observation deck for a view of the city and without exception they were amazed by what they saw.
The observation deck is fully enclosed which can make night photography difficult due to the reflections on the glass from the well lit observation deck. For night photography it is recommended that walk the few flights of stairs up to the revolving roof deck on the 84th floor which is open air and enclosed by mesh.

Evening view from the Observation Deck

Entrance to the Observation deck costs 120 baht for adults and 60 baht for children. Annoyingly the entrance fee charged to Thai nationals is significantly lower. Opening hours are 10.30 am to 10.30 pm seven days a week.
The Baiyoke Sky Hotel is located at 222 Ratchaprarop Road, smack bang in the center of the clothing markets of Pratunarm. There are literally hundreds of clothing outlets in the vicinity of the Hotel and at night the area is chaotic with traffic and people trying to squeeze in between the rows of vendors selling clothes, souvenirs, food and more food!
The Hotel itself offers 673 large, comfortable rooms and suites with all the usual facilities – aircon, cable tv, minibar and very spacious bathrooms. The views from the rooms are excellent as is to be expected.

Daytime view from the Observation Deck

The Hotel’s reception desk is oddly located on the 18th floor of the building, the first 17 floors being taken up by parking space. To reach your room you must take an elevator from the ground floor to the 18th floor then change to a second elevator to reach your room. The 18th floor also features a 24 hour coffee shop and fabulous views across the city skyline.
There is a swimming pool on the 20th floor which again offers some great views across the city. There are also several restaurants, a roof top bar, a fitness center and 24 hour room service and reception. The room service menu is limited and expensive – it’s best to venture outside the hotel if you get hungry!
